Maati begins where incense began: with the materials themselves. We trace each wood, flower, root, and resin to the place it comes from, then make it into something meant to be used every day. Hover a point on the map to see where each one comes from, because the place is part of what makes the scent what it is.
Sandalwood and vanilla
Mysore
Karnataka, South India
Santalum album, aged for depth and warmth, paired with soft vanilla for comfort and balance.
How it is made
Measured to the gram, chosen to the grade.
Every blend is built to a formula we hold to. The exact grade of sandalwood, the specific harvest of rose, the ratio each note is allowed to hold, and how far forward it sits once the stick is lit. A gram more of one material and the balance tips, so each batch is weighed, tested, and burned before it is approved. Hover a step to see how it works.
01
Sourcing
Grade and harvest
Every material is chosen by grade, not by name alone. We ask which harvest the rose came from, how long the sandalwood has aged, how the vetiver roots were dried. Two batches of the same flower can smell a season apart, so each delivery is smelled and approved before it enters a blend.
02
Blending
Ratios held to the gram
Each fragrance has a formula with a fixed ratio for every note. A gram more saffron and the rose disappears behind it, a gram less sandalwood and the base thins out. Materials are weighed, ground, and folded into natural binders in the same order every time, so the scent is the same in every box.
03
Hand rolling
Even coat, even burn
The paste is laid along each stick by hand at a consistent thickness. Too thick and the stick smokes heavily at the start, too thin and the fragrance fades halfway. Small batches let the women rolling them feel the weight of each stick rather than trust a machine to guess it.
04
Curing
Weeks of resting
Batches rest for weeks so the materials settle into one another and the sharp top notes soften. We test burn from each batch before it is approved, checking how the scent opens, how far forward each note sits, and whether it holds steady to the last centimeter.
What goes in, and what stays out
Pure by design.
Natural material, hands instead of machines, and packaging that can go back into the paper stream. Choose a topic to see exactly how each part works.
What is inside
Only what grew.
Every blend starts as raw material: sandalwood powder, dried rose petals, vetiver root, green tea leaf, saffron, resin, and pure essential oils. Nothing is stretched with synthetic fragrance oil, chalk filler, or artificial color, so the scent you smell is the material itself rather than an imitation of it.
